I'm curious, so explain the process you go through when you've got a new skit/stunt/vid to make.

I start with a nice fat bowl, then proceed create a folder named like "name of skit" on my C:/footage drive.

I then open pinnacle and capture each tape as 1 gigantic file.

Then I open vegas, pack another bowl, and space out for a while.

Usually, I'll use the trimmer in vegas to pick out certain scenes, but alot of the time, I drag the whole clip on the time line, (way at the end), and just pick the clips out of it as I need them.

By the end of my project, I have the begining of the time line looking like and edited movie, and all the space after that is random clips from hours and hours of clipping scenes and placing them where they need to go.

Does this process sound familiar to any of you other editors?

Got any tips on how I might do this better?

I'll probably ignore them, but you can try anyways.

In case you didnt know; I use Vegas 6.0

I dont see how you can add a huge file to the timeline, and just pick bits out and edit it that way.
Just seems so hard. Prolly alot easier with skits, as usually you'd just film the skit in order, from start to beginning, unless you decide to re-do a scene or whatever.
But with stunts just seems so much harder, when your tryna find a nice stunt to go with the music at a point in time!

I usually just capture my footage on and move all the clips into one of my "footage folders" each folder has a name like "skits" "stunts" "other" "WMV footage" etc.
Id just select a song (which usually takes me days for some reason) then look through what stunts I could use where, going off the thumbnailed pictures it displays and just drag, trim, and effects and transitions if needed, ill do this as I go along.

God damn it, I cant make a post short, oh well.

I usually just go through the tape and capture the scenes I need or sometimes like you I just capture the hole thing in one go, but not often.

Then I start at the beginning and load each scene into the monitor and set my in/out points to get my cuts right, then I drop them in the timeline. I do that with all the clips put them in the right order.

Then I go and add any transitions, sound effects or special effects.

Once thats done I add titles where needed.

And to finished off I stick the "fcv present" and "end" and the honk and out tag thing and voila, skit.

That pobably made no sence to anyone.

EDIT: My spelling fucking sucked haha I think it must be bedtime.

These days I get on the computer and think about how horribly bad I want to make everyone on homegrown forums look, if I only want it to be relativly bad I just make the worlds greatest videos. Your all lucky I don't want to make you look like shit cause you wouldn't be able to turn away from your screens and humans would cease to populate. Of course I wouldn't never reveal the secrets to this but I will talk about how I edit.

I have the the basic 4 or 5 stunts I want to show, then I think about the song I want to use (this can take fucking weeks).

I don't like editing without a beverage, I prefer Faygo Cola, but I will also use Dr.Pepper or Dew (for the caffene only and so I don't have to leave my room, I also have a cup sitting around to piss in so I don't have to leave my chair). I usually have a dvd in dvd player behind me or a show on just cause I like working to noise.

I then basicly put all the clips I want in there and edit somthing really basic up. Then get pissed at it and contemplate using it anyway hoping that no one will notice the shitty work (I usually do this and you guys usually don't). But the days I go "fuck that" I pick another song, and invision the whole mix up before I even edit it I already have edited it (I don't use those fancy effects cause they arn't my style and I can't edit to them) this makes editing in my mind alot easier.

I try to start the beging of with somthing either funny or really good (stunt wise), I fill in some filler shit for about two or three scenes then another good stunt or prank. I do this till I use up the 4 or 5 stunts I originally planned using. After that I clean up the adiuo and the little things like the scenes not coming in right now time. After that I show it to a few people on my msn list and get some feed back. I then either submit it or keep working on it.

Okay, I'll post how I really edit since someone asked me in IM.

I start by watching the tapes. I just watch them, no capturing or anything, to get a feel for the footage. I go through a second time and capture them. While I'm capturing, I do up a log in the editing program and break the tape up into clips so I know where everything is. I give all the clips little names to remind me of what they are, with a certain system I have (like "Wide group talking about whatever" or "CU Boner talking about whatever", "Overhead car drives under tree", etc.) I usually list every character in the shot in its name so I can see whos in what.

Once its all captured, I do the picture edit first, not worrying about sound. I put everything in the timeline in rough order. Whenever I make a small change, I watch it all back start to end, if possible, so I can see how the small change affected the flow of the video.

After I get the rough edit done, I'll go back and start tightening the screws, overlapping peoples dialogue, cutting away when necessary, removing stuff that is slowing it down, or even rearranging scenes if I have to (but I usually do that in the rough edit.)

Only after all of that is done will I do the audio. If it needs music I'll start trying to find what to use at this point. Mostly this is just making sure all the levels are right, adding sound effects that are missing, and any filtering.

After that I go back and filter the video if I wanted to use any color filters or anything, because at that point I can't do it in real-time anymore (has to be rendered out.) This is the point where I hook up the TV and watch it all on the TV while I edit instead of the computer monitor.

Finally, I watch it about six zillion times, until I absolutely hate every aspect of it. Then I'll usually go back, pull the filters off, rip the scenes back apart and make a bunch of changes. Then repeat everything above. I do that a few times.

FINALLY, after all that, I'll compress it and shoot it out to a few people. Based on criticism, I'll make more changes.

Only after all that will I usually release a clip.

Sorry for the long ass post!

Doesn't capturing in Movie Maker give you .WMV files?
11 January 2006, 02:59 UTC#16
No, you have the option to capture .avi or .wmv.

Movie maker is good because it's easy and when you capture with it, it all comes out as one file of all the stuff you wanted.
