and its not , its about helping people with cancer and other diseases, with a little friendly competitions between teams across the whole world, nothin should be argued over, because we all help the cause, and thats what matters.

Too lazy to read that site, someone explain in short how this helps people with cancer. My uncle just died last week from cancer, how the fuck would this help someone like him. I dont understand.

bascially, when protiens fold, sometimes they mess up, which is pretty much cancer and diseases,

this calculates differnet things abut them and figuers out stuff that may help

well this is how I think it works, it finds out what the cancer is vulnerable to, and helps big smart people make vaccines/cures for it. someone correct me if im wrong

Proteins are biology's workhorses -- its "nanomachines." Before proteins can carry out these important functions, they assemble themselves, or "fold." The process of protein folding, while critical and fundamental to virtually all of biology, in many ways remains a mystery.

Moreover, when proteins do not fold correctly (I.e. "misfold"), there can be serious consequences, including many well known diseases, such as Alzheimer's, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, Huntington's, Parkinson's disease, and many Cancers and cancer-related syndromes.


One Example of Results:

Our simulations predict several mutations which would have a signifincat impact on the rate of folding of p53. This one, Leu330, has already been implicated in cancer.

Unfortunately, I think my software went wacko at the last second. It said it was done, so I closed out of it to install console version, but I don't know if it transferred correctly.

As far as how this program works, it's basically something to help calculate the huge database of calculations for the people who are actually there doing the research. In short, it helps them better understand why protein folding occurs the way it does.

When proteins fold, it takes them about 10 nanoseconds to complete the process, and it's very difficult for any normal computer to calculate the movement. That's what Folding@Home is.

This is amazing, what will they think of next?!

It just goes though all there data and analyzes it. the more computers signup the more gets done....

It started with a company called Seti@home which used satellites to scan for Alien signals... Millions of people used it and it turned out to be really good in reading data... its still really big now.... But nothing found yet

So there using the same sort of idea to scan data for this. All you need to know is while your computer is idle or the memory that is free can be used to read this data and analyze it.... So you will be doing good
