I think 11bn is very harsh, but I've seen the damage spamming can do as a server administrator. Remember on my first server with exceed, when HGF kept going down? That was predominantly caused by spammers.

damn...but seriously...the people who complained probably got a good cut...just cause they checked there email and might have saw a tranny or two....no real harm done...to much money for something like that...

Spammers can bring a high end server down easily.
They'll spam the server, and and add to the mail queue so the server is processing thousands of e-mails at a time causing the load to shoot to incredibly high levels. Investigating which user the spam is coming from is time costly, and not always trackable as most mail scripts on a *nix server are run as "nobody". After you've terminated the users account you have to flush out the mail queue as loads will be high for weeks if you don't, which in turn loses a lot of e-mails which can further harm your business as you don't reply to clients emails as you havn't received them. Not to mention the scripts usually find their way into the /tmp directory which can cause major problems, even resulting in having to freshly install the entire server.

Dont you guys have spam filtetrs? I use SBC yahoo and only get a spam email like once every 2 weeks.

haha. Damn I get spam in my spam folder all the damn time. But Gmail filters close to all of it... I get about 1 spam e-mail a month now.
Theres alot of good spamming going on now... spoofing is getting better all the time. When I worked for this insurence company this lady got tricked with a PayPal e-mail and that cost here loads! Lost loads of cash on that... loads ofstupid people out there.
