3d studio max

anyone here know how to use it ?
I'm quite fucked with a few things so I'd like some help...

1) joining two 3d objects together
2) extending just a section of the object
3) inserting background/lighting
4) rendering and saving as .avi

on that site there are a handful of categories on left hand side above the list of programs.

and in the middle there is a keyword search thing
