the second one is high def. I think that's the only dif.

the first one is a step up to very high quality, well they have similar quality but more accurate control over specific things on the first. Not sure specifically what though, easy enough to look up

so the thing itself would be the same as the vx2100, but there's just more options to make the quality better in different places? plus the audio is proably a bit better.

I dunno but I might hire the DSR170 for a few days but since I dunno if its similair to the VX2100 I dunno if I should go for it :)

im sure the first one is more of a prosumer model than the second one you might wanna see if you get dolby digial audio with either of them.. sony has a dvd camcorded that records in dolby digital..

the 1st one is a pd170, the new version of a pd150. It is not HD, neither is the VX2100.

The pd170 can record in DVCAM mode, which is a step up from MiniDV in terms of less errors and drop outs. There is no difference in picture quality between MiniDV and DVCAM. DVCAM is just to reduce the common problems with MiniDV tapes. You have to buy special dvcam tapes to record in DVCAM.

THe pd170 also has XLR ports for audio. It has much better audio and easily hook up to boom mics and wireless mics. You'll need to be familiar with adjusting audio controls or youll end up fucking it up. I used the pd150 for alot of the filming of bangabum...and I fucked the audio up bad.

The pd170 is also about a $1000 more. In my opinion its not worth the extra $1000. I dont know enough about audio to get any significant use from the XLR ports and its done more harm than good for me in the past cause I didnt put the time into setting it up.

Go with the VX2100, it has better value and easier to config and use. Picture quality is the same. Same lens and same CCD's.
