Myspace is great for finding unsigned bands, they want exposure, you want music, just search for the unsigned bands that intrest you and send em a pm.

You could also go to bands at local clubs and ask them for usage, make sure you get everything in writing.

Whatever genre you are looking for, find a forum that unsigned artists post at.

Do a post in there asking for samples and tell them that you're making a DVD.

You'll get heaps sent out to you in the mail, it will save you looking around 100 sites listening to 1 song at a time.

Going for unsigned artists isa good start, but I had so much trouble with them. I said FUCK IT and went for the groups I wanted. My soundtrack for my upcoming dvd has sogns from

Swollen Members (canadian rap group, I actually got to meet them cause of it)
Dead Lazlo's Place (rad LA punk band, you might remember from old school crusty demons movies)

No fun at all

The Bouncing Souls

I have a number of songs from those guy and I didn't have to pay a cent. Unless my DVD sells heaps and then Battle Axe records (swollen) have a set price per 1000 copies..which is unlikely to happen, but if it does it's a few cents per dvd...

Don't aim too low, I had very little trouble with these guys.....I did have trouble with a few record companies but not as much as I did with the small local bands....and when shit got messy I told them to get fucked..simple

think about it anyway

Have you tried asking them? find out their record label, get the licenseing email address. tell them it's your first movie and it's a big learning experience for you ect. Talk shit and they will generally agree.....depends on how big they are..
Most mega huge bands are tied up with companies they cant control..but semi-massive ones are different again...

Were lucky, weve got quite a few decent unsigned bands willing to let us use their music.

I got one great unsigned band/signed band (hard to say really) that is letting me use their music....they're local and everything, yet they're not teens in a band, proper musicians...
