It's pretty much because he's the first US president in a while who's decided to negotiate terms with less-than-friendly nations rather than use military threats.
So yes, we're now awarding people international trinkets for choosing not to slaughter hundreds. It's like getting straight As at school just because you didn't walk in with you cock out and set the place on fire.

Fair enough, he mentioned in one of his sweeping epic speeches that he wants nuclear disarmament and withdrawal from the Middle East. I just find it hard to believe that out of 205 nominees, he was the most deserving. Seems like the Nobel Organisation is just going the way of the Eurovision Song Contest.

He's actually done a few good things - backed down from that ridiculous missle shield with Russia, had a go at restarting Middle East peace process, reached out peacefully to Iran, rescinded the Mexico City Policy. But those were all things that were common sense decisions that would benefit the USA both on a domestic and global level, I.e WHAT THE PRESIDENT IS EXPECTED TO DO.
To be honest I find it quite funny that it's announced Obama's will receive the Peace Prize the same day his country is

I'm with Rob on this one. Obama's been responsible for these rather important and world-changing actions America's made in the past year. In terms of scope, his actions have much larger implications in terms of Global Peace. Of course, he's the US president, it'd be tough to expect him to make any big decisions that won't affect the world.
