I haven't looked around too hard to see if there was a thread for this, but meh. Anyone know a cheap and easy way to do this? I've got some awesome footage of dudes snorting deep-heat, etc, but I can't use it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It'll take a bit of cash, but go to walmart and try to find a Digital 8 camcorder with a DV-OUT port that is also backwards compatible with Hi-8 tapes. Take the camera home, convert all of your old tapes to digital quality on your computer via firewire, then simply return the camera to walmart a few days later with the recipt to get your money back, or if you're still using the Hi-8 camera to film, then use the money you had spent on the Digital 8 camera to buy a low-end Mini-DV camera, that'd at least be a step up; either that or you could just keep the Digital 8 or try to find a cheaper one like it on ebay, that way you could still use the Hi-8 for second angles, and still be able to convert new Hi-8 footage you film to digital as well. Just a suggestion, but hopefully that helps.

THanks for that... I Love the whole return the camera once it's usefullness has expired mentality... Hunter s. would be proud, lol.
We've been using DV for about three years now, but there's quite a few decent stunts we filmed with parents cameras, etc. Before we got completely enamoured with the scene.
But that's a top idea... Cheers. Image file not present in the recovered backup

you have a number of options.
the cheapest is getting some a/v couplers and hoping u can record through your mini dv camera. or going through your computer if your lucky enough to have a/v jacks(like me)

you could also do what dude said and get a whole nother camera n return it n shit.

you could also send your tapes to a homevideo editing place and theyll convert them. but if your like me you dont want the wrong people seeing the wrong clip and calling the police.

you could also pick up a crazy converter thing. I seen them at best buy, has a bunch of different ports so u can record through firewire from anything.

took me about 3 months to figure out the $8 couplers are the cheapest, easiest and safest method. your welcome.
