Skipping Video

I got like 20 minutes of my dvd on a timeline in premiere pro 1.5 on a brand new laptop that only has the footage and the program on it. But often when I play through on the timeline to watch what ive done so far, it skips a ridiculous amount of times. Obviously this shouldn't happen, anyone got any idea why its doing that?

have you tried previewing it? I think pressing enter will do that.

I haven't used premiere in a couple of years, so I can't remember. haha

Are you editing or, what?

Also what type of video are you using? (.avi, mpg, etc...)

Yeah I'm editing and then when I just bring the bar to the beggining of the timeline it skips often, or it skips and then I have to start over to make it go away (which only works occasionally). All the files go .AVI

Hmm, not too sure then.... I dont use Premiere.

I thought the problem could of been with the video your using.... as non linear editing programmes like Premiere, Vegas, Studio and you know..... dont cope well with compressed file types like; mpg, wmv, etc.

No idea what the problem could be but it seems like a big file anyways, if your previewing the video cant you change the video quality of it (the preview)? if so change it too a lower setting and maybe it won't have as much trouble playing it??

Okay thanks! Yeah im still feeling out the program and everything so when I preview and so on I do everything very basic and whatnot. I thought maybe I just needed more memory or RAM or something so that it would run smoother, but considering footage is all thats on there and its a brand new computer, I kinda ruled that out.

what are the computer's specs?

Hard Drive 60 GB
Memory 512MB DDR
This is the computer new as a product, as far as mine personally id have to check obviously.

eh... my guess is not enough memory. 512 is not very much now adays.
