My Comp = Fucked...help Plz.

I followed various websites to dual boot linux ubuntu and windows xp on my computer and now I cant get into either. :-S

After installing GRUB boot loader I get a "Grub Error 17" at bootup and I tried everything, for those who know what im on about, its not installed on the MBR as all the sites were telling me not to do that and it is installed in the main linux partition.
I followed various tutorials and it all ended up the same.

I even used a live rescue CD and deleted all the linux partitions to put it back as it was so that I could load windows and it still looks for grub and comes up with that error, even though it now definatly is non-existent. Image file not present in the recovered backup

If anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated, I might not reply after some time because im having to use my mum's computer until mine is fixed. lol

Grub error 17 : Cannot mount selected partition
This error is returned if the partition requested exists, but the
filesystem type cannot be recognized by GRUB.

You could have fixed it easier had you not deleted grub. :-P

It would have been a couple of simple commands.

But probably what happened was that you had lilo installed on the wrong partition (hd1, hd2, etc.). lilo needs to be installed on the MBR of hd0, otherwise you would need another boot loader to choose your OS.

Install lilo on the MBR, and grub should work just fine.


If you are forced to restore the MBR, and go back to just running windows - might I suggest a live distribution, so you can just run your linux OS off your CD Drive? May be helpful.
