Nintendo Introduces Monochrome Game Boy
Nintendo has releases its handheld Game Boy. At $109 the system comes with Tetris, and despite a tiny monochrome screen, it is begining to build historic sale records. A Game Boy version of Super Mario (Super Mario Land), a Breakout clone (Alleyway), and a baseball game have also been released.The Game Boy was developed by Gunpei Yokoi and his R&D1 team at Nintendo. He wanted to combine the best features of the successful NES with the portability of the Game & Watch handhelds, which he also developed. Nintendo of Japan president Hiroshi Yamauchi predicts that it will sell over 25 million in the first three years.

Sega Releases 16-Bit Genesis
Sega released the 16-bit Genesis in the United States after limited success in Japan. The $249 system is packed with a conversion of the arcade game Altered Beast. Early marketing efforts push the system as a true arcade experience that's substantially better than previous home game machines. The "Power Base Converter," an adapter that allows Sega Master System games on the Genesis is being released and Sega is planning to release a modem and possibly a keyboard for the system by the end of the year.

Nintendo sues Tengen, a subsidairy of Atari Games, for creating a releasing a version of Tetris for the NES without having the license to do so, though Tengen thought they did. While Nintendo got its license from the russian creator. Tengen contacted the company, Mirrorsoft, which had the European license and got permission to release Tetris in the US. But Mirrorsoft only had a license to release Tetris in Europe, but not the US, so Tengen of course lost the case, but did not really suffer any financial losses since Mirrorsoft had to pay all the damages to Nintendos version, for lost sales. All copies of Tengen's version of Tetris were taken off the store shelves and destroyed.

Arcade Age Dying?
New generations of home computers and home video game consoles has sapped interest from arcades. Older consoles, such as the Atari 2600 and Mattel's Intellivision, were general-purpose and were meant to play a variety of games, and often couldn't measure up to arcade game hardware, which was built for the singular purpose of providing a single game well. In fact, the glut of poor-quality home video game systems contributed in no small way to the video game crash of 1983. But the debut of the Nintendo Entertainment System and the Sega Genesis began to level the playing field by providing a reasonably good arcade experience at home. They greatly improved home play and some of the technology was even integrated into a few arcade machines. Already many video game arcades across the country have gone out of business. and it seems more to come
